Myra: Halal Food Scanner

Understand what's in your food, ingredient by ingredient.

Scan a barcode or an ingredient list. The app explains what may raise a question about halal, and why, according to the strictness you choose. It informs; it doesn't issue a religious verdict.

Frequently asked questions

Does the app tell me whether a product is halal?

No. It shows the possible origin of each sensitive ingredient (gelatine, E471, carmine, alcohol in flavourings…) according to the strictness profile you chose. The decision is yours. For meat, only the packaging or the certifier you follow can tell you how the animal was slaughtered.

Where does the data come from?

Product sheets come from Open Food Facts, a collaborative database under the ODbL licence. Is something missing or wrong? Correct it directly on Open Food Facts: everyone benefits.

For US and Canadian products that Open Food Facts doesn't have, or whose ingredient list it lacks, the app also checks the public USDA FoodData Central database of the US Department of Agriculture (public domain).

The product can't be found. What can I do?

Switch the scanner to “Ingredient list” and point it at the text on the label. Reading and analysis happen on your iPhone.

How do I cancel my subscription?

In Settings › your name › Subscriptions, or from the app's Profile tab (“Manage my subscription”).

How do I report a mistake in an explanation?

Write to us at the address below, with the product and the ingredient. The rules are updated without waiting for a new version of the app.
